Police reported that Lee was discovered unconscious in a car in a Seoul park, next to charcoal briquettes, a common method of suicide in South Korea.

Born in 1975, Lee was a prominent figure in South Korean cinema. His wife, concerned after finding a suicide note left by him at home, contacted the police, who promptly discovered the actor already deceased.

Lee’s death occurs amidst controversy. He was being investigated for alleged use of illegal drugs, a crime severely punished in South Korea. The actor was interrogated by the police several times, including an exhausting 19-hour interrogation last weekend.

Lee claimed he was induced to use drugs by a bar receptionist who then attempted to blackmail him. This aspect of the investigation was being closely followed by the local media, increasing the pressure on the actor.

Known for his role as the patriarch of a wealthy family in the acclaimed 2019 film “Parasite”, Lee Sun-kyun also stood out in other South Korean films such as “Helpless” (2012) and “All About My Wife” (2014). Moreover, he starred in Apple TV+’s first original Korean series, “Dr. Brain,” a science fiction thriller released in 2021.
